Flag Fen Bronze Age Centre
Flag Fen Bronze Age Centre, The Droveway, Northey Road, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, PE6 7QJ.
Flag Fen is an extensive archaeological park, including reconstructed roundhouses, a museum and the research dig itself. Inside the museum are artefacts found on site, including the oldest wheel in England on permanent display. Visitors can imagine life inside the Bronze Age roundhouse, which is is based on one excavated at Fengate in 1976 and also step inside the Iron Age roundhouse which is typical of the houses that would have been in use around 250 BC. Also on site is a Roman herb garden which includes the plants which the Romans would have used.
There are also many rare breed animals including Soay sheep, the smallest and most primitive of the British sheep breeds which would have been the type kept by people in the period between 2000 BC and 600 BC, and the Flag Fen pig, a cross breed between a Tamworth and Wild Bore, which produces the type of pig that would have been familiar to Iron Age man.
