SCO Leader Christopher George directs a concert boasting two of the most popular works every written for strings. Elgar’s Serenade and Tchaikovsky’s Souvenir de Florence were both written at the start of the 1890s, when Elgar was a promising young talent in contrast to the senior figure of Tchaikovsky. Elgar’s youthful spirit sings out in every note, but Tchaikovsky gives him a run for his money with sheer breathless excitement.
