Apsley House
Apsley House, 149 Piccadilly, Hyde Park Corner, London, W1J 7NT.
Home to Arthur Wellesley, the first Duke of Wellington, and his descendants, this internationally important property has for over 200 years been known colloquially as 'No 1 London', as it was the first house to be encountered after passing the tollgates at the top of Knightsbridge.
When the seventh Duke of Wellington gave the house to the nation in 1947, together with its magnificent collections, the family retained the private rooms, which they use to this day.
The contents of the house are a testament to the first Duke and his life as both a Parliamentarian and one of Britain's most famous military figures. His brilliant military career led to him being created Viscount Wellington in 1810 and subsequently Earl, Marquess and then Duke of Wellington in 1814. Wellington's military career has been well documented, his most famous victory being the defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo on 18 June 1815. As a politician, he rose o become Prime Minister in 1828.
