American Museum in Britain, Claverton Manor, Bath, Somerset, BA2 7BD.
The American Museum in Britain is housed in an impressive eighteenth century house, Claverton Manor, which was designed by Jeffry Wyatville. Inside visitors can see a series of some 15 rooms depicitng different furnishing styles and which include a wide collection of American furniture, panelling and silver. There are rooms in the Shaker style, an opulent New Orleans bedroom of 1860 and a parlour from a Baltimore farmhouse.
Particularly striking is the large collection of quilts and other textiles in the textile room. A temporary exhibition is held each year and this year until October 2007 is a display, Dollar Princesses, about American heiresses in Britain and how they married into the British aristorcacy in the late 19th century
Outside,the grounds extent to over 120 acres and look out over the Limpley Stoke Valley. Much of the landscaping dates back to the 1820s in a parkland style, with fine specimen trees and natural features such as a grotto. The gardens are terraced into the hillside and in keeping with the American rooms, the museum also has a garden inspired by George Washington’s American garden at Mount Vernon,and a Colonial Herb Garden There is also an American Arboretum.
The American Museum displays through a series of period rooms, hich illustrate American domestic life from 17th century to the American Civil War.
