Bewl Water, Off the A21, Near Lamberhust, Kent, TN3 8JH.
Bewl Water reservoir is the largest stretch of open water in south east England. It's set in an area of outstanding natural beauty on the Kent and Sussex border. Bewl is not filled naturally by streams but has water pumped into it from the rivers Teise and Medway. It was featured on national televeision as an indication of the effects of the drought. But since then a wet winter has enabled Bewl to be replenished and and at the beginning of April it appeared full to the brim. The reservoir is home to a wide variety of wildlife. Visitors can observe many kinds of waterbirds from the shores or from the purpose built hide which is situated within the Nature Reserve at the South Western end of the reservoir. In Spring you can see Great Crested Grebes carrying out their courtship dances. There are also a great many variety of ducks, coots, terns and of course Canada Geese. The shores are also a habitat for mammals including foxes, badgers, rabbits, deer and even doormice.
Visitors can park at the visitor centre where it is possible to hire bicycles or buy a permit for fly fishing. Bewl is well stocked with rainbow trout. Those attempting to walk or ride round the reservoir should take care; it is further than it looks. The round resevoir walk is a good 13 miles.
