Crich Tramway Village

Crich Tramway Village, Matlock Road, Crich, Matlock, Derbyshire, DE4 5DP.
Crich Tramway Village is a lovingly restored period village incorporating the National Tramway Museum and its world renowned archives. There are over 50 trams and other vehicles, including a horse drawn tram, steam trams and trailor units. The indoor exhibition centre brings to life the history of trams and also gives visitors the opportunity to witness the ongoing restoration work to the tram collection.

For a mere penny, visitors can ride the trams to and fro throughout the day as they run across the cobbled street of the village, beneath Bowes-Lyon Bridge and up to the top of the valley offering glorious vistas of the Dales. For those whose interest runs a bit deeper, there is the opportunity to spend the day learning to drive a vintage tram for around £200.

Crich Tramway Village also caters for those of a less trammy disposition. There is a pub and a tea room in the village and a new Woodland Walk & Sculpture Trail that takes you on a stroll around the surrounding woods and countryside. The Trail is liberally sprinkled with large wooden sculptures depicting figures such as a giant ant and a child-eating troll (who apparently can be placated by whipping out a camera).

Speaking of kids, they are not forgotten. Aside from the Woodland Walk, there is also an indoor "Discovery Depot" to spark their interest and an outdoor adventure playground to keep them entertained while dad plays tram driver and mum relaxes in the tea room (or the pub).
