The Farne Islands lie two to three miles off the Northumberland coast. As well as being the most famous Sea Bird Sanctuary in the British Isles they also have a large colony of Atlantic or Grey Seals. Visitors can see vast seabird colonies, especially those of the Auk family such as Guillemots, Razorbills and some 70,000 Puffins. The boat trips have been run by members of the Shiel family since 1918 and Billy Shiel was awarded an MBE for his services to tourism in Northumberland in 1997.
