London Friday Night Skate, Wellington Arch
London Friday Night Skate, Wellington Arch, Apsley Way, Hyde Park Corner, London, Middlesex, W1J 7JZ.
The London Friday Night SkateTM is a ten to fifteen mile street skate around London, every Friday (hence the name). We do a different route every week - one week we might take in famous central London roads and sights, another week we'll head for some long fast downhills in Camden or Putney, or even a trip to the countryside out at Barnes. The traffic is made aware of the skate as it passes by our expertly co-ordinated volunteer marshals (on skates), and we even have a portable sound system on a bicycle. The LFNSTM operates year-round, subject to weather. Each week at 5pm on Friday we announce on our homepage whether it's going ahead or not. We leave from Wellington Arch (map) at 8pm: aim to get there a few minutes early to make sure you don't miss the announcements and don't get left behind. The skate lasts about two hours and is split into a medium-paced "red" section followed by a ten minute halftime break, then a faster "black" section. Usually we loop back around to the start point, except for special events and skates where we finish up somewhere else and you'll need to find your own way home. The LFNSTM is not a protest! We're nothing to do with any political organisation, we're not environmental protesters, and we're not Critical Mass. We're a lot faster than Critical Mass.
Never skated? If you've never skated before, please don't make a street skate your first outing! We'd suggest taking some lessons and spending some time practicing on Serpentine Road in Hyde Park. Street skating isn't too hard, but we wouldn't want your first experience to put you off. Once you can stop and turn, the Sunday StrollTM is a good place to start.
