Festival of History
Festival of History, Kelmarsh Hall, Main Road, Kelmarsh, Northampton, Northamptonshire, NN6 9LY.
With over 80,000 visitors since English Heritage first staged its flagship event, the Festival is now bigger than ever.
This year, for the first time, visitors can experience the challenges of day-to-day life under the conditions of trench warfare in a walk-through interactive WWI trench experience.
Also new for 2007 is Highwaymen! Visitors can wander along an authentic 18thcentury street, meeting craftsmen and women of the time when, twice a day, the peace will be shattered as a group of desperate buccaneers and dashing highwaymen lay siege to the village. Cannon will fire, a stagecoach will come under attack, horses will gallop, bosoms will heave and duels will be fought.
And, following their popularity at last year’s Festival of History, the ‘Fly Boys’ make a welcome return, transporting visitors back to the First World War as, twice a day, the men of the Royal Flying Corps take to the skies to do battle with the Imperial German Air Force.
An outline of the main arenas:
The Main Arena: A display of Artillery through the ages from pre-gunpowder Imperial Rome to the rapid-fire of the 20th Century; an example of the training methods and manoeuvres of the Roman army; followed by a hair-raising horse race across the arena – without stirrups; and the re-enactment of a 12thcentury battle for Dublin between the Normans and the Norseman
Tournament Arena: The Knights’ Tournament returns for a one-off special as four teams of 15thCentury Knights battle it out at jousting, archery, foot combat and skill-at-arms. Choose your favourite team of knights and cheer them on as they battle it out in four different contests throughout the day!
