A peasant family are trying to make a living but are caught in the cross-fire of history. The father believes that if he were only left in peace he could build a haven for his family on the land where they live. But as the dangerous world outside creeps ever closer, the confrontations bring the children into contact with another world beyond that which their father hopelessly clings to.
