Richard Arkwright established the world’s first successful water powered cotton spinning mill in 1771; it is recognised as a vital step in the move towards full scale factory production. The mills at Cromford with their powered machinery, large workforce and factory village became models for others throughout Britain and are widely considered to be the driving force behind the Industrial Revolution.

Today Cromford Mill is home to many small businesses and educational service providers and employes over 100 people. Tours run hourly from 10am with the Mill Tour taking about an hour and a specially extended Full Tour, which includes Cromford Village, Worker's Houses, the mill water courses and so on, taking approximately 2 hours. There are special tours for youngsters which include role play and entertainment.
