Walking for pleasure is Britain’s most popular leisure activity. According to the Ramblers Association 77% of adults walk for pleasure at least once a month. So what makes a good walk? The Donowdo Team have carried out a staw poll. This is what we discovered. Our respondents thought a good walk should:
- Tire you out. It is only a good walk if you want to stop a little time before you actually do. Of course how long this will take will depend on how fit you are.
- Include a measure of challenge. This can either be that you have to climb something that gets you out of breath, risk getting lost, or risk getting chased by a farmer or dog.
- Include a pub, either at the beginning, or the end, or in the middle of the walk – or with some respondents all three.
- Include variety in the landscape
- Avoid retracing your steps
- Avoid traffic
- Avoid too many other people (This can be in conflict with no 3)
- Take in somewhere new
