Border History Museum

Border History Museum, The Old Gaol, Hallgate, Hexham, Northumberland, NE46 1XD .
The museum is located in the first purpose-built gaol in England - built in 1330 to imprison convicted Reivers (unruly Borders families). It concentrates on the history of the Reivers with reconstructions, artefacts and interpretation. Not to be missed is the tragic tale of the Earl of Derwentwater, beheaded for his part in the 1715 Jacobite Rebellion.
